A baby turned into a lizard and a sun into a moon
Bunun's Sun-Moon Legend
At first, there was no moon. Instead, two suns rose by turns. There
was no night, but day. It was so hot and dry that crops could not be
grown. Nevertheless, the Bunun people worked very hard.
One day, a man and his wife went to work in the mountains.
They placed their baby on a pile of rocks with a piece of cloth as
a protection against sun. At first, they could hear when the baby
cried. After a while, however, the crying stopped. The couple rushed
back and saw a lizard among the rocks. The baby was nowhere to
be seen. They went home sadly, and decided to go to the place
where the suns rose and shot one of them down.
The man set off with his eldest son. They carried grains of millet
between their fingers to eat along the way. They planted an orange
tree in the village to see how long the journey would take them.
They had walked through mountains and wild fields for more than
ten years before reaching the place where the suns rose. It was very
bright and hot there, and the big leaves they used as protection
were dried immediately. As soon as one of the suns stuck its head
out, the father shot a bow and hit the sun in one eye. The sun fell
from the sky into a valley. It tried to catch the man and son, but
they slipped through its fingers.
After chasing them for a while, the sun stopped and said, "stop
and listen. Now that I'm blind in one eye, I give off less heat. I am
no longer a sun. I became a moon. You go home and worship me
every month. I will tell you what rituals to perform for each of the 12
months. Also, from now on you plant crops according to the moon
phases."
