Deity Votong descended to teach human being farming
Sakidaya wisdom embodied
in spinning tops
In the distant ancient times, the people of Sakidaya did not
know very well how to farm. It was therefore not easy for them to
get food and they often suffered from hunger. The deity Votong saw
their suffering with compassion, and decided to go down and help
the Sakidaya people.
Votong married a Sakidaya woman named Savak and lived
with her family. When the others were busy working, he spent the
whole day making tops instead of tending his wife's family field.
The tribe thought he was not productive and looked down on him.
His mother-in-law, Kurumi, even wanted to kick him out of the
house, but he remained indifferent.
One day, he threw all the tops into the field, and a miracle
happened. The tops began to spin. Each top worked very hard
like a human being. They turned over the field, sowed, weeded
and harvested. They farmed in an orderly manner and with higher
efficiency than farmers. The tribe was astonished and asked Votong
for advice on farming techniques. Votong told them to work with
and learn from the tops. He also gave people many seeds, such as
rice, millet, etc., and taught them all the rituals and taboos about
the annual rituals. Since then, the Sakidaya have been able to grow
millet and feed themselves.
After some time, when all the tribe learned farming techniques,
Votong thought he could return to heaven. He told his wife, "I will
take you up. Don't look back on our way. You will fall down the
