made a promise and said goodbye to the whale. The tribe was

shocked to see him return, while his younger brother and his
accomplice were too ashamed to raise their heads.

The promise sa Rarungaw made to the whale was kept. Every
year before the harvest festival, his tribe, Lalaulan, performs a sea

ritual (qemilja) at the shore to thank the whale for saving his life.
The ritual was discontinued around 1960 when rituals became

less and less performed in the tribe. It was not until 2001 that the
practice of sea ritual was resumed.
