around where they lived. They caught the mouse and said to it,
"Have mercy on us! We are going to throw you into the sea in

hopes that you can absorb all the sea water, so that we Yami(Tao)
people may survive." Then they threw it into the sea. Soon, the sea

level began to fall. It turned out that it was a celestial being who
descended in the form of a mouse to save the Yami(Tao) people.
It was not until several years later, when the seven survivors

saw that the sea had stabilized and no longer rose, that they began

to move down from the mountains. By that time, the island was
covered with trees and flowers, and the land fertile. Since then,
Lanyu Island has never been hit by a big flood again.
