botbotol which means fox became Hu ( 狐 ) and then Hu ( 胡 ), and
kamlala:i’ meaning cicada became Chan ( 蟬 ) and then Chan ( 詹 ).
Likewise, they call themselves Saisiyat, while the Chinese call them
Sai-Hsia.
It is a Saisiyat tradition that the rituals are performed by
respective responsible families. For example, the Chu family is
responsible for paSta'ay, or the Ritual to the Spirits of the Short
People; the Fengs for kap'elet ka ba:i', or Wind-pacifying Ritual;
the Pans and Changs for ka'owazan ka kawaS, or Good Weather
Making Ritual; the Hsias and Hsiehs for kapa'azawan ka kawaS, or
Rain-stopping Ritual; and the Dou elders for tinato', or Enemy Head
Ritual.
