           An Atayal Tale of Stars

There was a young Atayal man named Sasan. He was

handsome and strong. The elders in the tribe praised him and the
girls adimired him. Indeed, the elder with the highest status in the
tribe was so happy with him that he married his daughter Lawa to

Sasan. The couple was a perfect match envied by other young men

                             and women.
Shortly after the marriage, Sasan set out to hunt in the
mountains with other young men in the tribe. He told his new wife

to meet at Monkey Hill in five days. When the appointed time came,
Lawa took her backpack and went with excitement to welcome

Sasan. On the way, she crossed a young man of the tribe. He told
her that Sasan had hunted a lot and thus was walking behind.

Lawa was proud and excited until she met another group of
hunters. They told her, “Sasan is carrying heavy animals on his

back. Go and join him quickly.” Lawa became anxious. She hurried
up the hill, but walked a long way without seeing any sign of Sasan.

When she finally saw an untidy man coming in her direction, Lawa
came up and asked him, “Have you seen my husband, Sasan?” The

man looked up and answered with wide eyes, “I AM Sasan!”
Lawa was annoyed and said: “Don’t kid me. My husband is very

handsome. He will never be as dirty as you are.” “How come you
don't recognize me!” responded the man. He left without looking

back, and she, tired and upset, moved on. After that, Lawa didn’t
cross anyone else from the tribe. She was frustrated and had no

choice but to return. She got home late at night only to find that
Sasan was already there. Upon seeing her, Sasan complained with
