Glass Beads as Tokens of Love

                  Love Between

a Puyuma Girl and a Stag

There was a Puyuma family living in the mountains. They grew

crops in a field they have created in the wood, and built a lodge
where they could retreat for some rest. Every day, they left home

early in the morning to work in the field.
The family had a beautiful daughter who usually worked in

the field with her parents. One day, the parents returned home by
themselves, leaving the girl alone in the field. Out of blue, a very

tall and beautiful stag appeared near the lodge, with strings of
shining glass beads hanging on his beautiful antlers. The girl was

so fascinated by the colorful and eye-catching glass beads and the
elegant stag that she couldn't help coming closer and closer to the

stag. When the two met, the stag gave her one of the strings, and
                                    she fell for him.

Since then, whenever the girl's parents left her alone in the
field and no one was around, the stag would appear and give her

a string of glass beads. The two acted like lovers. The glass beads
became tokens of their love, symbolizing their firm love.

One day, the family was shocked and angry to find that their
field has been trampled by a wild animal and the crops that were
about to be harvested have been damaged. When the girl's parents

were about to tidy up the field, the stag somehow appeared. They

thought the stag was the one who has trampled their field, and
killed the stag with an arrow. Her father cut off the head of the stag
and took it home. The girl was very sad. She told her father that she
