Gives Herself to Save Tribe and Family
A Glowing Girl Forced into
Marriage
Legend has it that Tiyamacan, the youngest of six children in
the family, was already glowing when her mother was pregnant
with her. Soft light emanated from her mother’s body. She grew
into a pretty teenage girl, attractive to many young men.
One day, when Tiyamacan’s mother asked her to fetch water
near the coast, Felalakac, the son of the Sea God, saw something
glittering on the land. He was curious and swam closer to the shore
from the eastern sea to find out that the light came from a beautiful
girl. He fell in love with Tiyamacan.
Felalakac asked her what her name was, and why her body
glowed? “I am Tiyamacan,” she said. He then asked her, “Are you
married?” “Not yet,” she replied. Upon hearing that, Felalakac
proposed to her and said that he would come to marry her in five
days. He then turned around and swam back to the east.
Tiyamacan told her parents and brothers and sisters what
had happened at the coast as soon as she was home. The family
became frantic. They decided to hide their youngest daughter in a
wooden box, but her light came through it. They then buried her
along with the box. The light still came through. They did not know
what could be done.
When the fifth day came, a sudden storm together with
earthquakes and tsunamis hit the tribe. The family knew it was
the sign that Felalakac, the son of the Sea God, had arrived.
People were frightened and ran to higher ground for safety, except
