Summary of Employment Survey for
Indigenous People in 2019
I. Indigenous people over 15 years of age
1. Administrative region: In 2019, the average number of indigenous
people aged 15 or older currently residing in Taiwan for the year was
456,563, of which the largest number of people, 202,553, or 44.36%,
resided in non-indigenous ethnic areas; this was followed by those
living in mountain indigenous ethnic areas at 140,681, or 30.81%; and
plain indigenous ethnic areas at 113,330, or 24.82%.
2. Statistical region: The highest number of indigenous people aged 15
years and over in 2019 was 156,095, or 34.19%, living in the northern
region; this was followed by 145,542, or 31.88%, in the eastern region;
89,896, or 19.69%, in the southern region; and 65,030, or 14.24%, in
the central region.
3. Ethnicity: In 2019, the largest number of indigenous people over 15
years of age were Amis, at 37.91%; this was followed by Paiwan, at
19.18%; Atayal, at 15.51%; Bunun, at 11.36%; and all other ethnic
groups, at less than 5%.
4. Gender: In 2019, there were 217,941 indigenous males over 15 years
of age, or 47.74%, and 238,622 females, or 52.26%. Compared to the
general public, all people over 15 years of age are also more female
(50.75%) than male (49.25%).
5. Age: The age distribution of indigenous people aged 15 or older in
2019 is 20.88% for those aged 15-24, 38.41% for those aged 25-44,
30.77% for those aged 45-64, and 9.94% for those aged 65 and older.
